Thoughts on Valentine’s Day Gifts

As Valentine's Day approaches, I thought it would be fitting to share with you the history of this romantic holiday and why it is still relevant to us as Christians.

Valentine's Day has a long and storied history, dating all the way back to ancient Rome. Legend has it that Saint Valentine, a Christian priest, performed secret marriages for young couples in defiance of Emperor Claudius II's ban on marriage. He also allegedly sent letters of love and encouragement to those in prison, signing them "From your Valentine."

Despite the holiday's origins in pagan Rome, many Christians have embraced Valentine's Day as a celebration of love and devotion. After all, God himself is the ultimate embodiment of love, and he calls us to love one another as he loves us.

But let's not forget the practical side of Valentine's Day: giving gifts to our loved ones. Some may scoff at the idea of showering their significant other with chocolates and flowers, dismissing it as nothing more than a commercial ploy. But I believe there is real value in showing our love through tangible gifts.

As the Bible tells us, "Every good and perfect gift is from above" (James 1:17). When we give gifts to those we love, we are not only expressing our affection for them, but also acknowledging the blessings that God has given us. We are reminded of the abundance of love and grace that surrounds us, and we are inspired to share that love with others.

Of course, gifts don't have to be extravagant or expensive. Sometimes the simplest gestures can mean the most. A homemade card, a thoughtful note, or even just a heartfelt hug can convey more love than any material possession.

So this Valentine's Day, let us celebrate the love that God has given us and share that love with those around us. Whether it's through gifts, kind words, or acts of service, let us show our loved ones just how much they mean to us. And let us always remember that the greatest gift of all is the love of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
